Nam candidates keep cards close to their chest
Secrecy and mind games have shrouded the race for Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) Executive Committee elections scheduled for Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi District on Saturday.
Most aspirants have kept their cards close to their chest in fear of being betrayed as was the case in recent Nam polls when friends leaked crucial information pertaining to electorates.
So far, Nam incumbent General Secretary, Carol Bapu, has declared her intention to seek re-election.
She told Radio 2 FM Tuesday that she has unfinished business with Nam. Bapu cited Malawi Queens’ third-place finish at last year’s Fast5 Netball World Series as one of her achievements.
Following reports that Nam President, Rosy Chinunda, will not stand again, Southern Region Netball League Chairperson, Khungekile Matiya, is reportedly vying for the presidency.
“Of course, I am contesting but as of now I won’t say for which position. Just wait until Nam secretariat releases the list of candidates,” Matiya said.
Former Malawi Netball Queens skipper, Judith Chalusa, who is also the Southern Region Netball Committee Chairperson, has been linked with the vice presidency.
However, Chalusa, told The Daily Times to wait for the official list.
“It is just a matter of time before all of us will know the complete list of the candidates,” she said.
Nam Treasurer, Abigail Shariff, is reportedly bowing out of the race. However, we failed to get her official stance.
Sources also indicate that Nam Vice Treasurer, Jane Kachali, will contest. She, however, declined to confirm her position.
Former Nam general secretary, Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa, has also been linked with a return to the association. However, she could not be reached but sources suggest that she might stand for either president or general secretary position.
Nam Vice President, Chimwemwe Kachingwe, according to sources, is also seeking re-election.
“I am still consulting,” Kachingwe insisted on Friday.
Renowned umpire Faggie Mwalweni is also considering running for a Nam post but we were unable to get her confirmation.
