Nam in passionate appeal for North league

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) is courting some well-wishers to come to the rescue of the Northern Region Netball League, which has had no sponsorship for the past five years.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said it was sad that teams in the region were not playing competitive netball.

“We are worried with the situation because the Northern Region Netball League has the same capacity as the South and Central Region Netball leagues. It is our wish that all our leagues should be functioning very well,” Bapu said.

She cited Central Region Netball League top teams Blue Eagles Sisters and Civonets as beneficiaries of a sponsored league.

“Some years ago, teams from the centre were struggling during national events but the situation has changed. They are now able to beat teams from the Southern Region and this is because they have a sponsored league,” Bapu said.

Bapu asked the corporate sector to come to the rescue of the league to help teams from the region compete well against their Southern and Central region opponents.

Eagles won last year’s Presidential Cup after dethroning giants Kukoma Diamonds whereas Civonets also defeated Diamonds twice during their successful 2017 GOtv Netball Champions League campaign.

Most players that don Malawi national netball team colours launched their careers in the Northern Region and they include Sindie Simtowe-Msowoya, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango and Jane Chimaliro.
