Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) affiliates have completed the nomination process for elections scheduled for August 7 in Salima District.
The polls were postponed in May following affiliates’ complaints of irregularities in the nomination process.
Chairperson of the independent electoral body overseeing the polls, Judge Silvester Kalembera, said all is set for the polls now that affiliates have completed the nomination process.
Kalembera disclosed that Emmie Tchongwe and Abigail Sheriff have been nominated for the post of president while Chimwemwe Bakali and Anastazia Kaphale will vie for the vice presidency.
The High Court Judge said Isaac Chimwala and Linda Magombo will compete for the post of general secretary while the contest for the role of vice general secretary will be between Diana Nkhulembe and Yamikani Kauma.
“Agness Chaima and Tadala Billy have been nominated for the post of treasurer while Chancy Munthali and Cecilia Bondwe will compete for the position of vice treasurer. The nomination process was free and fair.
“We had district sports officers overseeing the process and the nominated candidates were made to sign forms in line with the positions they have been nominated for,” Kalembera said.
Waya-Tchongwe, former captain for the Malawi National Netball Team, confirmed that she had thrown her hat into the ring.
“I have indeed been nominated for the Nam presidency. Time has come for the netball fraternity to arrest the dwindling standards of the game in the country through voting. I have always said that we need someone who is a team player at the top of the game in Malawi.
“My vision is to improve netball in the country. I want to see netball being played in districts and schools not just as a hobby but as a career. We need to equip the game with concrete courts all over the country,” she said.
Former Nam treasurer Sheriff declined to take any questions on what she intends to do for the game should she make it.
The electoral body has been screening nominated candidates since last week.
Incumbent Nam President Khungekile Matiya recently announced that she would not seek re-election despite being eligible.
