The long-awaited Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) elective annual general meeting will take place on August 7 in Salima District.

This follows a meeting between the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) and the Independent Electoral Committee held in Blantyre on Wednesday.

Chairperson of the electoral body, Judge Sylvester Kalembera, confirmed the development yesterday.

“Yes we, indeed, met and set a date for the elections. The other details will be provided later,” Kalembera said.

MNCS postponed the polls in May this year after some candidates complained of irregularities.

However, Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) General Secretary Carlo Bapu expressed ignorance on the new date.

“Nam, are yet to get official communication from the committee; so, it will be difficult for me to comment,” Bapu said.

Meanwhile, Nam affiliates have protested the proposed date for the polls.

Northern Region Netball Committee Chairperson Chancy Munthali was not happy with the new date.

“Let those entrusted with managing the elections refrain from taking affiliates for granted. Sports Council told us that the election would be held within two months and holding the polls in August does not make sense,” Munthali said.

Chitipa District Netball Committee Chairperson Allan Nkhonjera shared the sentiments, saying the elections should be held before July 30.

In a separate interview yesterday, one of the presidential candidates Emmie Waya-Tchongwe said she was waiting for confirmation of the new date.

Incumbent Nam President Khungekile Matiya, Tchongwe and former Nam treasurer Abigail Shariff secured nominations.

The battle for the association’s vice presidency is between former Kukoma Diamonds General Secretary Chimwemwe Bakali and Anastasia Kaphale.

Netball icon Linda Magombo-Munthali and Isaac Chimwala also secured nominations for the post of general secretary whereas Diana Nkhulambe, Yamikani Khungwa-Kauma and Vitumbiko Mwademange Gubuduza were nominated for the post of vice general secretary.
