At long last, Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has started reviewing Malawi Queens allowances following calls from some quarters, including senior players.
Queens allowances are deemed on the lower side and there have been calls to revise the bonuses.
Currently, Malawi Queens players receive an internal allowance of K1,500 daily and US$50 ( about K22,000) external allowance.
Nam general secretary, Carol Bapu, confirmed the development but said they were discussing with the government before the new allowances come into effect.
“We have started negotiating with the government because they are the main sponsors of the team. We need their input during the revising process,” she said.
Bapu could not state on when the revised allowances would be put into effect.
“It’s too early to disclose but it is our wish to implement them during the next camp,” she said.
Queens left the country on Sunday for South Africa to take part in the Diamond Challenge which eluded Malawi national netball team in 2013 when they lost to South Africa in the last game.
The four-member competition will take place at the Ugu Sports Centre in Margate on the KZN South Coast from today to Friday.
In the opening fixture, Queens will face Uganda today before taking on continental rivals South Africa on Wednesday.
Queens will then date neighbours Zambia.
Top two teams are expected to fight for the championship with the runners-up battling in the third place play-off. All the four teams are using the Netball Diamond Challenge in preparation for the Netball World Cup.
South Africa and their main African rivals, Malawi, are old hands at the NWC, but this year’s World Cup in Sydney, Australia will be a second for Uganda and Zambia.
