Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has called for support from stakeholders to help Malawi Queens compete at this year’s Fast5 Netball World Series in October in Melbourne, Australia.
There are fears that Nam exhausted its annual subvention from the government and the team’s participation in the international tournament hangs in balance.
Malawi National Council of Sports Executive Secretary, George Jana, said he had to crosscheck if Nam exhausted its annual funding.
“It is just my assumption. I need time to verify with relevant officials,” he said.
Nam President, Rose Chinunda, could not be drawn to state if the association had exhausted its funding.
Chinunda said much as the association expects the government to support the initiative, there was need for other well-wishers, to assist the senior national team.
“We really need support from well-wishers otherwise we will not participate. We have confidence in our government because of its unwavering support,” she said.
If Malawi fails to take part in the international tournament, there are fears that the senior national netball team would be penalised.
Chinunda said they were desperate to compete at this year’s Fast5 Netball World Series to maintain the Malawi national netball team position on world rankings.
“Firstly, we need to maintain our ranking, so if we stay idle, we will suffer. Besides that, we can be penalised for failing to represent Africa. It is us (Malawi) and South Africa that were seeded to take part in this tournament,” she said.
Meanwhile, Nam’s initial budget of about K35 million was trimmed to K33 million. Nam needs funds to take the team into camp and allowances for the players.
According to the arrangement, the host country and International Netball Federation INF) provide accommodation and other travel expenses to the participating teams.
The event will see the world’s top six netballing nations compete in netball’s fast and exciting modified version of the game, one of the most popular events on the INF calendar with fans, players and broadcasters alike.
