Nam yet to implement Queens coach plans

NO PEACE OF MIND— Chawinga Kaluwa

Malawi national netball team coach, Peace Chawinga- Kaluwa has accused Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) of failing to implement her plans.

Chawinga-Kaluwa, having been named Queens coach on a three-year deal replacing veteran Griffin Saenda 11 months ago, submitted plans to Nam in February.

The plans included a proposal for individual training to shape players ahead of netball resumption globally.

But the plans are gathering dust as Nam officials are yet to respond.

Chawinga-Kaluwa said she was left frustrated as the association was yet to give her feedback.

“It is a bit frustrating for me as I submitted my plans in February. I have been pushing for a meeting with them to discuss the plans. For me to implement the plans, I need to get Nam’s consent but since we met in South Africa, there has been no any meeting with them to plan for the future. The players were supposed to follow my training schedule while staying safe at home,” Chawinga Kaluwa said.

In the proposals, Chawinga-Kalua suggests proper transition for the Queens and also focus on grassroots netball. In her plans, Chawinga-Kalua is focusing on rebuilding exercise where she wants to replace some of the aging players in the near future, ahead of future tournaments.

She has also proposed participation in at least three test series every year with highly ranked netball teams in the world.

Nam president Khungekile Matiya said they needed a complete plan with input from other technical officials.

“She submitted a technical report after Africa Championship which she included plans for the team. But we need holistic plans with the views from the Technical Director and assistant coach. So at the moment the plans need to be refined,” Matiya said.

Queens recently reclaimed sixth spot in the World despite being inactive for the past nine months due to Covid-19 pandemic. The team is also back on position two in Africa, having displaced Uganda.

Malawi last participated in an international tournament in October last year during the 2019 Africa Netball Championship in Cape Town.

Chawinga-Kaluwa is deputised by White Mlilima, with Samuel Kanyenda as the Technical Director.

Chawinga-Kaluwa is one of the highly experienced netball coaches in the country, having also captained the team for 15 years. Kaluwa was also under 21 coach between 2001 and 2010 before being promoted to the position of assistant coach to Edith Kaliati for the senior team in 2012.

In 2014, she was co-coach for the senior team alongside Mary Waya.
