National Bank of Malawi hands over K8 million boreholes

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc on Thursday handed over two boreholes worth K8 million to Ndirande and Chichiri primary schools in Blantyre to improve health and sanitation at the two schools.

NBM Chief Executive Officer, Macfussy Kawawa, said the bank funded the drilling of the two boreholes after being approached by Rotary Club of Blantyre.

“ I n kee p ing with ou r philosophy of being the pride of the nation, because we are the bank of the nation, we are committed to playing our role towards resolving some of the challenges associated with inadequate water supply.

“Companies operating in the country have a responsibility towards our students and pupils. Bringing safe and clean water to Chichiri and Ndirande primary schools is just one example of being socially responsible. We hope others will emulate this gesture,” Kawawa said.

NBM also presented 40 plastic buckets, 20 to each school, to enable the pupils clean their classrooms as well as water flowers and grass around their classes so that they live in a green environment.

Blantyre City Mayor, Wild Ndipo, hailed NBM and the Rotary Club of Blantyre for the gesture.

“What you have done to our children at Chichiri and Ndirande is very commendable. How I wish there were many companies willing to assist in providing critical resources to our children in primary schools,” Ndipo said.

He said the boreholes have come at the right time considering the water challenges the city is facing.
