National Bank of Malawi takes go green campaign to Mzuzu

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) on Saturday partnered Moyale Barracks and planted 1,200 trees in Kaning’ina Forest Reserve in Mzuzu.
NBM Mzuzu Service Centre Manager, Eric Munthali, said the initiative is part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and a way of creating an environment friendly to their clientele.
“We are a financial institution, but today we are into this because we are operating in an environment where we are trying to reach out to our customers, so that members of the public are not negatively affected by issues of depletion of the environment,” Munthali said.
He said the bank will continue sponsoring the event with (Malawi Defence Force) as one way of sustaining the environment and also enhancing their relationship.
MDF Brigadier General, Dennis Mtanji, said forests provide training grounds for the soldiers hence the need to protect them.
“The initiative has come from MDF Commander who decided that we should s tar t guarding forests in the country like Dzalanyama and Chikangawa. Safe guarding these forests is crucial to us in order to have training areas because we cannot train at football grounds,” Mtanji said.
Mzuzu City Mayor, William Mkandawire, commended MDF and the NBM for the gesture and requested members of the community to be responsible in protecting and replanting trees.
