National Registration Bureau officers to start sit-in today

National registration officers have said they will start a sit-in today if the government fails to settle their demands.

The officers gave their employers PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and National Registration Bureau (NRB) a seven-day ultimatum that ended Monday to increase their salaries.

The spokesperson for the disgruntled officers Rudolf Kachapira said Monday authorities are yet to respond to their demands.

The group petitioned PwC on Monday last week, expressing their dissatisfaction with the K5,600 daily allowance.

The group said they are supposed to be receiving K10,000 as a daily allowance but with the high cost of living, they are now looking for K20,000.

“We plan to put down our tools from Tuesday (today) because the National Registration Bureau and the PricewaterhouseCoopers have not yet responded to our grievances. The daily allowance we are currently receiving is not enough and we heard that the issue was tabled in Parliament where it was agreed that we should be getting K10,000. We now want K20,000 as daily allowance and our colleagues that were fired unceremoniously should be brought back, otherwise we are not relenting,” Kachapira said.

However, NRB spokesperson Norman Fulatira said the bureau has not yet been served with the petition.

He said the bureau will act upon receiving the copy of the petition.

“That is the issue of PwC because as I am speaking right now, we have not yet received the petition, hence I cannot comment on the matter,” Fulatira said.

But PwC Country Senior Partner, Ranwell Mbene, said the matter has been discussed with NRB and the information is confidential.

Mbene said he is not mandated to speak to the media on matters of the registration exercise.

“You know we work on behalf of the National Registration Bureau and after receiving the petition, we discussed with the NRB but it is confidential, hence you can talk to them.

The officers have also not yet started receiving the K55,000 which the government promised to add to their salaries from the second phase.
