National Registration Bureau officers withhold recording biometric kit
National Registration Bureau (NRB) officers, who were laid off during the registration exercise, were Wednesday protesting, demanding their arrears from government.
The officers have retained a biometric recording kit (BRK) as one way of forcing the authorities to attend to their grievances.
In a memo that was released Wednesday, addressed to NRB Chief Director, the officers threatened to close all registration centres in districts where the exercise is still going on.
One of the laid off registration officers, Enock Mwale, said the protests would continue until their grievances are addressed.
“We want our employers [PricewaterhouseCoopers] to properly calculate our gratuity and annual leave. We signed a six months contract but it has been only four months and they are telling us they have terminated our contracts. We just want our money, we are ready to go home all we want is for them to fulfill [terms of] our agreement,” Mwale said.
NRB spokesperson, Norman Fulatila, said there are some officers whose pay has delayed. He, however, said the registration exercise is continuing and is being done by officers who are still under contract.
“All these are contractual issues. Those whose contract has ended have been given their money.
“Of course, there were two or three officers who were mobilising others and one of them ran away with a BRK, and we have already reported the matter to police,” Fulatira said.
