National x-country to open athletics year

By Ronald Mpaso:

The 2019 athletics season is expected to roll off on February 16 with a national cross country competition on February 16 at Gymkhana Club in Zomba.

Athletics Association of Malawi General Secretary Frank Chitembeya said the event will set the stage for a year full of several athletics activities.

Chitembeya said the cross country competition will involve runners from different parts of the country with preparations already underway.

“We will be announcing our presence on the country’s sports landscape with this competition. We will use this competition to reach out to all stakeholders who wish to partner us in the new season. We are calling upon them to join us on this day and enjoy our game,” he said.

Chitembeya said the association intends to organise three camp training sessions between next month and April to prepare athletes for big international competitions such as the IAAF World Championships and the IAAF Relay Race, which will take place in Qatar and Japan respectively.

He said the sessions will be followed by local and international time trials whose results will be used to determine the country’s potential representatives at the competitions.

“We will be very strict this time. We will not be represented at these two competitions if no one qualifies. So it is up to our athletes to train hard so that they make the grade,” Chitembeya said.

He also announced that this year’s Standard Bank Be More Race will take place in Lilongwe in June and will be followed by the national track and field championships in July at Bingu National Stadium.
