Nchalo United in slow preparations

Newly-promoted TNM Super League side, Nchalo United, are racing against time to finalise the assessment of their squad for the new season.

With the 2018 season set to kick off in April, Nchalo are also yet to play any friendly.

Nchalo Chairperson, Peter Chiipanthenga, attributed their unconvincing preparations to the coming in of new coaches.

“The contract of our previous coach [Mabvuto Lungu] only expired on January 31 and, until then, we could not sign any player. We only started moving when the new coach [Charles Manda] officially started working. So, we will finalise everything by the end of the week,” Chiipanthenga said.

Chiipanthenga said several players including Ghanaian left-back Daniel Obeng and Nigerians, Olasunkanmi Ezekiel and Sheriff Atanda-are undergoing trials with the club.

Nchalo’s preparations are in sharp contrast to other newcomers, TN Stars and re-entrants, Karonga United, who have played friendlies against Nyasa Big Bullets, Silver Strikers and Masters Security in the off-season.

Football analyst, Stuart Mbolembole, described Nchalo’s position as being untenable, saying a team needs between six to eight weeks to prepare adequately.

“Nchalo should have finalised the recruitment process in good time so that the players should get used to each other. Time may not be on their side. They will have little time to finalise preparations,” he said.

Newly promoted teams from the Southern Region struggle to escape relegation in the Super League and it is yet to be seen if Nchalo can break that jinx.
