Veteran musician Elias Cowboy Ziphondo famed for the track ‘Ndimakonda Magitala’ died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre on Friday.
The old-timer who lived music and was versatile at playing the guitar was laid to rest in Chilomoni, Blantyre Sunday.
Some musicians took to social media to mourn the veteran musician, who apart from making a track that a lot of artists have performed it during live performances, also taught several other musicians.
Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) President Gloria Manong’a said the music industry will miss Ziphondo’s expertise.
“These are the veterans who were always available to impart knowledge to the younger ones. He is one of the artists who was passionate about music and played music his whole life,” Manong’a said.
Veteran musician Patrick Simakweli said he was saddened by Ziphondo’s death.
“I learnt a lot from him and in most of my live performances; I used to perform his song’ Ndimakonda Magitala’. This is a beautiful song,” Simakweli said.
In one of the interviews he had with The Daily Times, Ziphondo said music will always be a part of him and that he was thankful to God for giving him the talent.
Ziphondo was among 11 veteran musicians, who in April this year were honoured with certificates, cash and hampers by Mum Southern chapter during an event which was held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre.
