Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) President, Khungekile Matiya, has asked the government to hike the sponsorship of Presidential Initiative on Sports’ competitions.
Netball has been getting K30 million from the government-sponsored K120 million initiative since its inception 10 years ago.
Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony for this year’s competition on Saturday at Katoto Netball Court in Mzuzu, Matiya said the sponsorship has never been hiked to reflect the rise in the cost of living over the years.
“We have been running the netball tournament with the same K30 million [package] since 2007. So, I feel it is high time the government raised the sponsorship. Teams need to get more money from this competition,” she said.
Matiya said increased sponsorship would enable Nam identify talent from remote areas of the country.
In his response to the plea, Malawi National Council of Sports Board Member, Rodrick Chiwaya, promised to take the request to higher authorities for consideration.
“I understand the concerns and I promise that next year there will be good news,” Chiwaya said.
This year’s champions, Blue Eagles, collected K4 million while losing finalists, Kukoma Diamonds, pocketed half the amount.
