Neula, Tonono crowned Mr and Miss Unima

Innocentio Neula and Vuyiswa Tonono from University of Malawi – Chancellor College in Zomba over the weekend were crowned Mr and Miss Unima 2019 respectively during a social weekend organised by University of Malawi Students Union (Umsu).

Neula outclassed four other contestants in the men’s category while Tonono, who is also the reigning Miss Chanco, outshined five other contestants.

Apart from Chanco, the other contestants came from The Polytechnic, College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing.

Neulo is a Bachelor of Arts Communication and Cultural Studies second year student while Tonono is a first year student pursuing Social and Economic History.

The two will hold the office for a year.

Madalitso Amos from Chanco emerged first prince with Joseph Nyirenda from Polytechnic is second prince.

Catherine Songo from Polytechnic was the first princess while Tabitha Mkwapatira from Chanco emerged second princess.

Tonono said she was happy to have come out top.

“I promise to be a champion for girl child education. I will also make sure that I am a role model so as to raise Unima’s flag,” she said.

Neula promised to work in the interest of fellow students as well as be an ambassador for young people in various spheres.

“I pledge to work to the interest of my fellow students as we work towards achieving our life goals”, Neula said.

Umsu President Daniel Moyo described the event as a success and hailed sponsors such as Itel Mobile for being part of the event.

Itel Head of Marketing in the Southern Region, Richard Nyoni, said they offered support as part of corporate social responsibility.

“Our brand is youth centred hence taking an interest in this event and we are satisfy with the way everything was run,” Nyoni said.

He also said that they used the platform to unveil a new brand, Itel P33.

Neula and Tonono also received mobile phones each.

Hosted by Blak Jak and Ruth Kulaisi from Times and Zodiak respectively the event was spiced up by music performances from Malceba, Piksy, Sangie, Nyanesi, Theo Thomson, Size Zero, Saint, Kell Kay, Wikise, KG and Theba Staks.
