With a potential cup drought looming, there is good news coming from Football Association of Malawi (Fam) which is expected to unveil a new elite cup sponsor at Mpira Village in Blantyre today.

However, the new competition is likely to affect the harmonised domestic football calendar.

Fam Commercial and Marketing Director, Limbani Matola, confirmed that after lengthy negotiations, the association was set to unveil the new sponsor.

“Initially, we had three potential sponsors and after some presentations, we have finally reached a winning deal with the best offer on the table. It is now a done deal. We are set and can’t wait to inform Malawians and our fans about this great news,” he said.

The new cup is set to replace Carlsberg Cup after its sponsor Castel Malawi withdrew financial support due to financial problems whereas Airtel Top 8’s future is uncertain following the expiry of a three-year contract with Fam.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) General Secretary, Williams Banda, said it would be difficult to slot in a new competition as the calendar was tight.

“We released fixtures of all the games. Firstly, let us wait and see what the new competition is all about and how it can be slotted in. But as I said, our calendar is tight,” he said.

Fam Competitions and Media Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said pertinent details, including the cup’s schedule, will be answered during the unveiling.

“We know that there are concerns regarding where the cup will fit [on the calendar] but let the football fraternity calm down because we have addressed such concerns,” he said.

Some football followers expect the new cup to replace Carlsberg and make it three national cups after Fisd Challenge and Airtel Top 8.

Apart from the cup competitions, there are World Cup and Africa Cup fixtures which affect clubs.

Last week, Fisd Challenge Cup 2019 edition was unveiled when the sponsor hiked prize money for the champion from K16 million to K20 million.

Be Forward Wanderers have won Fisd Cup twice in three editions.

Silver Strikers won this year’s Airtel Top 8 cup.
