Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) has said this year’s National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Mo626 College Basketball competition will have a new format.
The tournament is set for launching on October 19 with NBM hiking the purse from last year’s K62 million to K65 million.
Basmal vice General Secretary, Banthari Banda, said there were plans to introduce street basketball with qualifiers taking place in all the three regions.
“We would like to come up with the most exciting basketball competition ever. We are considering a three-by-three street basketball fiesta which would have qualifiers in all the three regions within October. We could have the finals taking place at Blantyre Youth Centre on October 26. This is something we are working on,” Banda said.
He said there were plans to send the champions to a competition called Young Lions in Botswana next month.
Mo626 College Basketball tournament was introduced in 2017 with an initial sum of K30 million which was hiked to K62 million last year.
Winners of this year’s competition, which is for tertiary education institutions across the country, will get K2.5 million with the runnerup receiving K1.5 million.
