Nginjale Chitenje dies

Former boxing star Nginjale ‘Young Tough Ben’ Chitenje, who added colour to the sport with his tough talking—died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre Thursday.

The brother to the deceased, Mike Chitenje, Thursday confirmed the death of Nginjale who, at his peak, was a sworn rival to Wilson Masamba.

“It is true that he is dead but I cannot say much at the moment. Let us talk later,” Mike said.

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board publicist Frank Chibisa was, Thursday, in the dark about Nginjale’s death.

“We were in touch with his father, and all I know is that he was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Central Hospital,” Chibisa said.

The former super lightweight boxer was inactive since 2010 when it was reported that he had secured a job as a truck driver.

According to Boxrec, Chitenje last fought on May 30 2010 when he lost to Kenneth Chinthenga at Lilongwe Community Centre Ground.

In his last seven fights, Nginjale won twice against Hassan Mohamed in 2008 and John Masamba in 2006 at Lilongwe Community Centre and BAT Ground, respectively.
