Sitting on the floor during classes will be history for learners at Matawale, Chimpeni and Sakata Primary Schools in Zomba, as a non-governmental organisation, Villages in Partnership (VIP) has donated 120 desks to the three schools which are in the area of Traditional Authority Nkagula.

Speaking during the handover ceremony today, VIP Country Director, Wellings Mwalabu, was optimistic the donation will yield positive results in the area.

“We chose these schools because we have been working with them since 2009. We have had a very working relationship with them. That’s why we donated these desks so that together we work towards improving quality education,” he said.

Chief Education Officer for Zomba Rural, Veronica Nyaka, has hailed the initiative stating there is high enrollment in all the 200 schools in the district.

“We have 200 schools in Zomba district. The enrollment numbers for the schools we have in this district are so high at an average of 2000 learners.  So we have been facing challenges on the number of desks. We thank this organisation for such a gesture,” she said.

In his remarks, Traditional Authority Nkagula thanked the organisation for the initiative saying the goal to uphold the quality education in the country would be achieved.

Matawale Primary School got a share of 60 desks, whereas Chimpeni and Sakata have had a share of 30 desks each.

The donation has cost the organisation funds amounting to K7.5 million with support from their colleagues in the United States of America.
