Nico hires fire forensic experts

Nico Holdings Limited has hired fire forensic experts, Crawford and Company, from South Africa to establish the cause of the fire that destroyed the company’s Blantyre offices on Friday.

Nico Holdings Group Executive Committee organised a press briefing Monday to update the nation on the fire and continuity of business following the accident.

Nico Group Managing Director, Vizenge Kumwenda, said the company has hired the experts to provide a report that would be accepted by the company’s stakeholders.

“As you know, we are in insurance business and we have local and international experts. In this matter, the company has chosen international experts to do the assessment. We want the report to be accepted by all our reinsurers, both local and international,” he said.

Kumwenda said the experts were expected to arrive in the country yesterday to start work.

He said no one would access the building until the assessment is completed, adding that cost of the damage would be ascertained later.

Kumwenda said all the services which the company provides are available as, Nico General, Nico Life and Nico Pensions, who were operating from the building, have relocated to Umoyo House.

“A disaster recovery and business continuity plan is in motion and we assure our clients of continued service. Nico General, Nico Life and Nico Pensions are offering services from Umoyo House, fourth floor, Victoria Avenue,” he said.

For over three hours on Friday, fire brigades from Blantyre City Council struggled to put out the fire which destroyed the third floor of the building.
