Nico invests K190 million in school project

Nico Holdings Limited has embarked on a two-storey classroom block building project at Mbayani Primary School in Blantyre worth K190 million.

Partners such as SR Nicholas, Green Arch Designs, WTM Chirwa and Lacosus, have offered pro bono services in the project.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony of the project on Tuesday, Nico Holdings Managing Director Vizenge Kumwenda said the firm believes that every child deserves better education and an equal opportunity.

“We are also proud to be part of the team that will set a standard for expanding schools through the maximisation of limited space available.

“We shared an architectural proposal to the city council through Eris Properties, one of the companies, to put up a double-storey building to utilise the limited space we had while still achieving our cause of giving more classes to our children,” Kumwenda said.

Blantyre City Council Chief Executive Officer Dennis Chinseu commended the company for the gesture.

Mbayani Primary School has 7,479 pupils supported by 95 teachers that operate 4 class session shifts from 7:30 am to 16:30 pm.

The school has 32 classroom blocks. However, about 10 percent of the pupils still take classes on open grounds.
