Nine arrested for killing suspected blood sucker

Police in Karonga District on Tuesday arrested nine people on allegations that they killed a 19-year-old man whom they suspected of being a blood sucker.

Karonga Police deputy spokesperson Frank Black said Julius Kanjere, 45, and eight others from Mwalukebo Village, Traditional Authority Kilupula, allegedly murdered Wakisa Kumwenda on April 1 2020 at Mulinda Village in the same area

“The suspects descended on Kumwenda, accusing him of being a bloodsucker. Having killed him, they have since been on the run until Tuesday when they were all apprehended,” Black said.

He said the suspects are facing murder charges.

“Police are reminding people that no blood sucker exists since nobody has ever been proved to have their blood sucked. So, anybody found taking the law into their own hands over these rumours will be arrested and sent to jail,” Black said.

The Tuesday arrests come a few days after 40 other people were netted over charges of murder, illegal mounting of roadblocks and malicious damage linked to blood sucking rumours.

President Peter Mutharika condemned the attacks and ordered Malawi Defense Force to join forces with Malawi Police Service to crack down on those perpetrating the attacks which have so far left nine people dead.
