Nkhata Bay attacks send 120 into hiding

By Luzily Chiponde:
At least 120 people from Village Head Gomanjira of Msakanene area in Traditional Authority Timbiri in Nkhata Bay District are still in hiding following a fracas that erupted in the area last week that cost four lives and saw 26 houses burnt down.
According to Village Head Gomanjira, most of the people who have not returned to the village are children and women.
“We are still living in fear of a possible recurrence of the fracas. We are not sure of what will happen next that is why some people are still in hiding,” Gomanjira said.
The traditional leader has since asked the government to tighten security in the area so that those that are in hiding can return to their homes.
Last week, Vice- President Everton Chimulirenji assured people of Msakanene and Mkondezi that the government would send police officers to provide security in the concerned areas.
“Police will provide security as they will be patrolling these two areas in addition to the government sending relief food to the affected areas,” Chimulirenji said.
The fracas emanated from a visit by some people from Mkondezi to Msakanene last week Monday to follow up on their property which was stolen some time back. The visit slipped into attacks and counterattacks which resulted into the bloody confrontations. — Mana
