No award for Zani Challe at Afrima

It was the same old story at the All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) 2016 held in Lagos, Nigeria on Sunday, when the country’s South Africa-based singer Zani Challe failed to scoop the Revelation of the Year Award.

The country was hoping for the best from Zani, who was the only Malawian artist on the nomination list.

But luck was not on her side as the Revelation of the Year Award went to Falz from Nigeria.

The other nominees in this category were Amine Aminux from Morocco, EL from Ghana, Emtee from South Africa, Simi from Nigeria and Yamato Band from Tanzania.

The country also received a nomination in 2014 through Lawi, creator of Amaona Kuchedwa track but he failed to grab the award.

Some quarters however, have argued that the awards favour West African countries simply because they have more access to platforms such as MTV Base, Channel O and Trace.

It is hard for artists in Southern Africa to access such platforms which are dominated by West African artists and South Africa.

Zani received the nomination for her song Single Tonight which she collaborated with Nigerian star Patoranking.

Zani said yesterday that she was not worried that she did not scoop the award.

“It’s sad that I didn’t win at Afrima but I am happy I got nominated,” said the artist, who attended the event in Nigeria although she said was hard for her having lost her mother.

Despite missing out at Afrima, Zani made a statement in the Urban Music Party (UMP) Awards held at BAT Ground in Blantyre where she scooped the Best Female Act Award.

Zani was recently also named as the ambassador of the Theatre Mania Africa Festival (Taf).

She is one of the eight entertainers appointed by the International Central Working Committee (ICWC) for their forthcoming project set for March next year in Nigeria.

The singer was born to Malawian parents in Cape Town, South Africa but has stayed most of her life in South Africa.

The artist said she is proudly a Malawian and speaks volumes of her being Malawian in the track, Single Tonight.

Although her fluency in Chichewa is not up to scratch, she sings in the song that she is a beautiful lady from Malawi.

Once again Nigerian star Wizkid underlined his music supremacy when he was named Artist of the year.

The artist, also won two awards at the MTV Africa Music Awards (Mama) and MTV EMA Europe awards a fortnight ago.

The other artist, who did well at Afrima 2016, was Tanzania’s Diamond.

He was voted Best Male Artist East Africa and also got the Song of the Year Award for his track Utanipenda.

The Tanzanian artist was recently in the country and performed at the Sand Music Festival. He is also set to collaborate with the country’s singer and guitarist Lulu.
