There is no date yet for the postponed Malawi Housing Cooperation (MHC) tenants and Minister of Housing and Urban Development Anna Kachikho on the rental increment.
This comes as September 1 when MHC is expected to raise rentals for its houses fast approaches.
A similar meeting which was scheduled for July 17 at Comesa Hall in Blantyre failed due to the redeployment of then minister of Housing, Atupele Muluzi to the Ministry of Health.
Addressing visibly discontented tenants then, Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Msosa said Kachikho needed time to be briefed before she could intervene in the matter.
“It has pleased the President to move Honourable Muluzi to the Ministry of Health and replace him with Hounourable Anna Kachikho. I have only come to tell you that the meeting must be postponed because she needs some time to be briefed on the matter,” he said.
MHC tenants spokesperson Goodnews Mphande said there is still no date from the ministry for the meeting.
He said they were told by Msosa that the date of the meeting may be determined at another meeting by MHC management and the minister which is expected to take place on Wednesday.
“Last week Wednesday, Mr. Msosa said there would be a meeting between officials from Ministry of Lands and MHC management. I am told the meeting did not take place and has been shifted to Wednesday where a date for the meeting would be set,” he said.
Mphande insisted that if the meeting does not take place by September 1, they will not start paying the new rentals.
MHC announced the proposed rental increments in June this year which were to be effected by July.
MHC then suspended the increment only to announce later that the new rentals would be effected by September 1.
