With Covid-19 hitting the world and lots of activities including sports and arts being affected, the country’s Lilongwe based group Madalitso Band’s European tour has also been affected.
The group has been making European tours every year flying the country’s flag in different festivals but this year they will not tour Europe. Last year Madalitso Band which is made up of the duo of Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni toured Europe where they won the hearts of many.
Madalitso Band’s co-manager, Emmanuel Kamwenje, said Tuesday that Covid-19 has forced the cancellation of their European tour this year. “We had a meeting last Friday with them and fellow manager Neil Nayar where we briefed them of the cancellation.
At the moment, we are only looking at United States of America (USA) tour in August and September but this will also depend on how the situation will be by then otherwise all European gigs shifted to 2021,” Kamwenje said.
The group also had a show in Europe where they shared the stage with country mate Faith Mussa. “We just pray that the situation should come to normal soon otherwise a lot of things have been affected. At the moment artists cannot put up shows; in the absence of shows they are failing to make ends meet,” Kamwenje said.
He said they were currently working on a video for the group and also an online gig. “We have seen some musicians doing online gigs where they are making money as well as selling music online.
This is why we want to work on that and keep Madalitso Band active during this time,” Kamwenje said. Meanwhile Kamwenje, who also works with Ndingo Brothers, said the group will be releasing their music which was recorded in the 1970s later this year.
“We are just waiting for things to normalise and then we will have the songs. We are also working on having an online gig with them. So, there is more to come for people to sample,” he said.
