No extra-funding for Queens

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has been dealt a blow after government, through Malawi National Council of Sports, indicated that it had no extra funding for the Malawi Queens’ trip to Australia for Fast5 Netball World Series.

Nam exhausted its annual subvention and it needs about K33 million extra funding for the team to take part in the Fast5 Series in October in Melbourne, Australia.

Sports Council’s Executive Secretary, George Jana, said they alerted Nam that it would be difficult to secure extra funding from government.

“They know that they exhausted their funding and when we met them, we explained that it was almost impossible to secure additional funding. We also advised them to prioritise events accordingly,” Jana said.

Nam President, Rosy Chinunda, declined to comment on the funding. Airtel Malawi is also the Queens’ official sponsor and the company is expected to release some money.

International Netball Federation (INF) provides accommodation and domestic travel expenses for participating teams.

According to the arrangement, the host country [Australia] and Recently, Chinunda said much as the association expects government’s support, there was need for other well-wishers to assist the team.

“We really need support from well-wishers, otherwise we will not participate. We have the confidence in our government because of its unwavering support,” she said.

If Malawi fails to take part in the international tournament, there are fears that the team will be penalised.

Chinunda told the press that they were desperate to compete at the Fast5 so as to improve the team’s position on world rankings.

Nam’s initial budget was at K35 million before it was trimmed to K33 million.
