No funds for Maba polls

Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) is in dilemma to source funding for its elective extra-ordinary general meeting (EGM) following Malawi National Council of Sports’ disclosure that it will not fund the exercise.

The long-awaited EGM, scheduled for August 22 at Kamuzu Institute for Sports, Lilongwe, aims to address flaws which led to Maba’s suspension from the International Boxing Association (Aiba).

Aiba discovered that some Maba’s officials had, contrary to regulations, been previously involved in professional boxing.

Previously, Maba held elections by using its annual subvention drawn from the Sports Council, whose executive secretary, George Jana, now insists that “it is not in our policy to finance elections or any other meeting for any sport association.

Outgoing secretary in the suspended Maba executive, Mbachichi Nyirenda, said they would go ahead with the polls after notifying aspirants and invited affiliates to use their own resources to take part in the exercise.

“The de c i s ion ha s already been made and we can’t change it. We were used to a wrong tradition. We don’t have funds at the moment. There is nothing like transport, accommodation or food refund. Delegates must show their commitment by using their own resources. They have to sacrifice for the good course of the sport,” he said.

Nyirenda also warned uninvited guests, saying delegates’ identities would be vetted before being allowed entry.

“Strictly invited members will be allowed into the auditorium,” he said.

Meanwhile, the boxing fraternity is mourning the death of Central Region Boxing Committee chairperson, Daudi Osman, who died on Monday and his remains are expected to be buried today.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked. In the meantime we are waiting for the family to give us more details regarding his burial,” he said.
