Sulom withholds Blantyre derby broadcasting rights revenue

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has withheld Blantyre derby broadcasting rights revenue after giants Mighty Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets failed to pay fines following the fracas that marred their match in early May.

Both teams were fined about K2.1 million for various offences including failure to control their supporters. Wanderers were expected to pay K1.6 million while Bullets were supposed to pay K500,000.

Sulom President Tiya Somba Banda confirmed that both did not pay the fines within the stipulated 30-day period; as, such the body will deduct the fines from broadcasting rights revenue which the Blantyre giants were supposed to receive.

“We will forfeit part of their broadcasting rights revenue so it is offsetted,” he said.

However, both sides expressed ignorance on the matter.

Wanderers General Secretary Fadwique Matemba said they were waiting for official communication.

“Sulom have not communicated anything regarding the issue,” Matemba said.

Nyasa Big Bullets Chief Administration Officer Albert Chigoga said the People’s Team were not informed of the decision.

“We have not been communicated to that they will deduct from our broadcasting rights proceeds. If this is the arrangement, it is okay because we were still supposed to pay the fine,” Chigoga said.

The match between the two sides ended in controversy after Wanderers fans pelted objects after growing frustrated with referees’ performance.
