No money for Mchinji by-elections
The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has disclosed that it does not have money to conduct by-elections for Mchinji- West constituency.
According to Mec chairperson, Maxon Mbendera, the commission is supposed to conduct the elections before the end of term for the current commissioners on May 18 and October 10 for Mbendera.
“We wanted to do this before we get out of office but it looks like it may not happen. At the moment, I cannot tell you when the by-elections will be. We have serious challenges in terms of raising money for these things. They cost a lot of money, but they have to be done. The challenge is for the treasury to find the money”, said Mbendera.
The vacancy in Mchinji West constituency was created due to the death of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) member of Parliament for the area, Billy Kanjira Banda
Mbendera disclosed that the by-elections in December last year in Mchinji, Lilongwe and Zomba cost the electoral body around K208 million. He, however, said the money was not enough for the elections as the commission had to squeeze some processes.
