No one will die of hunger— government

CHIMULIRENJI—People are happy with this

The government has said no person in the country will die of hunger as it has put in place measures to support people facing food shortage.

The remarks were made by Minister of Civic Education, Everton Chimulirenji, at Zingwangwa Secondary School Ground where he held a political rally Sunday.

Some people in the country, especially those in low-lying areas, face hunger after floods that occurred the past two weeks destroyed maize.

“The President Peter Mutharika is serious and very concerned with the predicament of our friends who have been affected by floods. Let me assure you that everyone will receive aid and no one will die of hunger. We have had delays in relief distribution but that is due to logistical problems,” he said.

Chimulirenji also commended Mutharika for steering the country’s development agenda, citing rural electrification and road construction programmes as some of the notable ones.

He, however, bemoaned what he called a culture of castigating Mutharika which, he said, is based on jealousy.

“Some people are insulting President Mutharika, calling him all sorts of names. This is very bad. In fact, they are jealous. They know that Mutharika is development-oriented and has support all over. Let me emphasise that the Mutharika-led DPP [Democratic Progressive Party] government will not relinquish power as people are happy with this government’s administration,” he said.

Chimulirenji also promised to be a servant of the poor, saying he understands poor people’s predicament because he, too, had humble beginnings.
