The National Registration Bureau (NRB) says no Malawian will be panelised for failing to register during the mass registration exercise currently underway in the country.

The revelation comes following rumours that those who fail to register during the mass registration exercise will be charged about K15,000 t o register at a later date.

But speaking during a media tour of selected centres in Blantyre, NRB Spokesperson Norman Fulatira said no penalty will be levied on those who will register late.

Fula tira said the national registration exercise is free and that no Malawian will be charged to register to become a bona fide citizen of Malawi.

He observed that Malawians will only be charged when renewing and replacing lost national identity (ID) cards.

Fulatira could, however, not indicate how much Malawians will be charged for replacing the ID cards.

The tour revealed that some areas had long queues of people wanting to register while in other areas, the officials had almost finished registering the people.

Fulatira said NRB will not close the centres where there are still many people who have not registered.

“I would like t o assure Malawians that we will not close a centre where there are still many people who haven’t registered. We will only close the centres when the numbers of people coming to register have greatly fallen,” Fulatira said.

Kondwani Mtawali, who registered at Chigumula Primary School in Blantyre, said the process is simple when one understands what to do.
