No prize money for Zone VI championship

Winners of the on-going Zone VI Senior Volleyball Club Championship in Swaziland will not receove cash prizes, but only trophies and medals.

Confederation of African Volleyball vice-president, William Nhlapo, who is in the organising committee in Manzini, Swaziland, said the trend is that clubs play for the love of the game.

“It’s all about the way we do things the volleyball way. The teams just enjoy the competition. They just love the spirit of re-uniting every year to play the game that they like most,” Nhlapo emphasised.

He added that the zone contributes K3.1 million ($5,000) to the hosts for other expenses.

He said the K186,000 ($300) that each participating team pays goes towards the cost of trophies and medals for the winners, paying for international referees who travel from different countries and other costs related to the event.

“So, all participating teams know pretty well that they won’t be getting any cash prizes for winning. All we have are medals and trophies for the top-three teams and individual players awards in seven categories,” Nhlapo stressed.

He said it has been the zone’s desire to get sponsorship for prize money, but companies have not been forthcoming.

Nhlapo then commended clubs within the zone’s member states for their continued participation in the tournament despite the absence of prize money.

A total of 26 men’s and women’s teams are taking part in the event.

Malawi is being represented at the tournament by Kamuzu Barracks (KB) men’s volleyball team.
