No warm up for Junior Flames

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, has said Malawi under-20 national football team will not play friendlies ahead of their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game against Swaziland later this month.

The Junior Flames resumed training on Wednesday.

Gunda said they were unable to arrange strength-testing matches because the draw for the under-20 games took the association by surprise.

“The draw for the under-20 team came when we were not expecting it. We planned for the team in the second-half of the year. And because of that, we will not be able to arrange an international friendly. We will use games against local teams to prepare the team for the game against Swaziland,” Gunda said.

Under-20 Coach, Meke Mwase, said lack of a friendly might affect his charges’ performance.

“We would have loved to play a strength-testing match, but we have to accept the situation. We have played some local friendlies and we are hopeful of doing well,” Mwase said.

Mwase said there would be no changes to the squad that was called up for camp training.

The Junior Flames will host Swaziland in the first-leg on the weekend of March 21, followed by the away reverse fixture on March 31.
