TNM Super League champions, Be Forward Wanderers, have pleaded for help in their bid to raise K60 million to cater for friendly matches ahead of their Caf Champions League match against the Democratic Republic of Congo’s AS Vita next month.
Wanderers General Secretary, Mike Butao, said they have undertaken initiatives to raise money for the friendly matches but the response has not been encouraging.
“We came up with the Caf Imenyedwe Promotion but the response has not been as we expected. We are, therefore, appealing to every Malawian to contribute towards this cause because we are flying the national flag in Africa,” Butao said.
He said the team needs to play two to three international friendly matches with big clubs that have continental experience before taking on AS Vita.
Butao said the club has since approached several stakeholders, including the government, in a desperate attempt to raise the resources required for the friendly matches.
“The Champions League is a big tournament which requires thorough preparations. Playing local teams in preparation for this competition will not help us. We need to go to other countries and meet tough opposition,” he said.
Butao said the club approached mobile phone service providers TNM and Airtel to introduce an SMS promotion to help in raising more money for the cause.
The general secretary said the promotion was supposed to have rolled out last month and expressed hope that it would greatly contribute to their fundraising drive once introduced.
But Malawi National Council of Sports Executive Secretary, George Jana, said he was not aware of the Nomads approach to the government on the matter.
“Maybe they are doing it through Fam (Football Association of Malawi) but I do not know anything about it,” Jana said.
Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, also said the Nomads have not approached the association on the matter. However, Wanderers say they have the support of Fam in the fundraiser.
