Nomads strikers battle for fitness
Some Be Forward Wanderers strikers face a race against time to recover from injuries ahead of the new season.
The new season will kick off on May 6 with Wanderers hosting Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium.
The Nomads forwards Peter Wadabwa, Amos Bello and Precious Msosa are injured whereas Jabulani Linje and Jafali Chande have just returned to training.
Wanderers General Secretary, Mike Butao, confirmed that Bello and Wadabwa are major doubts for the opening game but Linje and Chande are available for selection.
“Some of the players have just resumed training and they are making great progress. Wadabwa and Bello still have some weeks to fully recover. But we have received a big boost because Linje and Chande have recovered ahead of the season,” Butao said.
Bello sustained a ligament collateral injury against Nyasa Big Bullets in the Wafawafa Bonanza whereas Wadabwa got injured during the Flames training recently.
The Nigerian and Wadabwa face four weeks on the sidelines.
This means that Wanderers will only rely on Jimmy Zakazaka, Ishmael Thindwa and Khumbo Ng’ambi as recognised centre forwards in the opening weeks of the season.
The Nomads, who last won the TNM Super League in 2006, are determined to claim the championship and defend the Fisd Challenge Cup, Carlsberg Cup, Wafawafa and Luso Bus Ipite bonanzas.
Despite having a star-studded squad, Wanderers finished on position six with 49 points on the league log table last season.
