The Royal Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, Kikkan Haugen, has commended Times Group for exposing corruption and fraud that is happening in the government.
Haugen said what Times has done so far in exposing the corrupt practices in the government is the right step in ensuring that public officers discharge their duties responsibly.
He was speaking yesterday when he visited Times Group to give moral support to the oldest media house in the country after government descended on it and closed its offices over alleged tax issues.
“One of the great assets that Malawi has is the independent media. It has great quality in terms of exposing some issues that happen in the public arena for the benefit of the citizens of Malawi. Sometimes it may be difficult for the government to take the criticism from the private media, but as Times Group, you have done well recently when you exposed the corruption happening in the country. Keep doing the good job,” said Haugen.
He further said what Times did by bringing attention of the country to the allegations of corruption in the government should be cherished by the government.
“Any government that is determined to fighting and rooting out corruption in the country needs to pat you on the back for exposing the vice. That is the first step towards consolidating our democracy and making public servants accountable to the people,” Haugen said.
He, however, warned the private media not to get tired or compromised in discharging their duties.
“Support government when you know is doing good and challenge it when you know it not doing right. And be concerned about the quality and accuracy of your reporting. Sometimes the quality of reporting in both the private and public media is not always up to the standards we always want it to be,” Haugen said.
Norway is the third biggest bilateral partner to Malawi according to Haugen and they run projects on areas like food security, health education and governance.
He, however, said their continued support is determined by how the country delivers on the projects, and the reformation and development of the country where human rights are respected.
