Not an April Fool’s Day
There were doubts from some quarters on Friday who felt South Africa’s DJ Sbu would not make it to the Chill white party organised by Carlsberg Malawi at Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre.
Carlsberg Malawi had been running the advert for some time that DJ Sbu was to headline the all white party but Friday being April 1; others felt the beverage company had played a fast one on them pulling their legs about DJ Sbu.
Their fears were even compounded by the fact that the 36-year old, who is now a successful businessman, record label owner, TV presenter and club and radio DJ delayed to come on stage with the country’s DJ Trick warming up the stage.
DJ Trick showed his magic on the decks as he dished out several of the songs including urban artist Tay Grin’s latest song ‘Chipapa.’ Tay Grin was present during the party.
It was after DJ Trick’s performance that DJ Sbu real name Sibusiso Leope took over the stage with the impressive audience anticipating nothing but the best from a man, who is believed to be Mzekezeke (masked kwaito artist).
DJ Sbu has never admitted in public that he is indeed Mzekezeke and once he took to the stage he went straight to business on the desks.
The successful DJ might be well up, but despite his close to two hour set, he did not show that punch let alone that wow factor and there was no magic.
Being a man from the rainbow nation, his set was dominated by House and Kwaito songs from South African artists.
And the songs did impress the audience taking them to the dance floor and before he finished his set, DJ Sbu, who took the platform to market his own energy drink called Mofaya, made a prolonged speech.
Having worked with some of the most influential radio stations in South Africa, DJ Sbu took the platform to call upon Africans to stop being consumers but rather work hard and produce own things.
“A lot of Africans are consumers that’s why we have a lot of Chinese and others flooding Africa with their products because they know we are many and they know we are consumers. But gone are those days, we need to start producing our own,” he said.
Dressed in a white rob, the DJ told the audience the importance of education and announced that he was currently doing an MBA since he was now into entrepreneurship.
“A lot of entertainers are not educated but we are a new generation of entertainers who are doing things differently and are there to bring about change. I tell you let’s be educated,” he said.
DJ Sbu said he was happy with the warm reception he had received and hailed sponsors Carlsberg Malawi for putting together the event as well as Protea Ryalls Hotel.
The entrepreneur, who has just clinched a show on CNBCA Africa in collaboration with Forbes Africa called ‘Kicking doors with Sbu Leope’ nearly bored some people as he kept on speaking about his successes some of which he had already said earlier instead of showing his skills on the decks.
The party which saw people dressed in all white with ladies as usual the sexiest on the night although there were still some, who did not adhere to the rules putting on other colours, ended soon after DJ Sbu’s performance.
After the performance the DJ went for photographs with the fans.
Some people were not happy as they thought the party would go all the way to the morning of Saturday.
“I thought the party will go on until morning, this is only 1am. I am disappointed because I was beginning to enjoy DJ Sbu. Next time they should do better,” said Dorothy Zungu.
Carlsberg Malawi Senior Brands Manager (Alcoholic) Twikale Chirwa hailed customers for coming out in large numbers to the party.
“We would like to thank people who are our customers for patronising the Chill white party. We came up with this event because we wanted to interact with our customers but also give them time to relax and we thought many like partying and the best was to bring DJ Sbu,” said Chirwa.
He said it was tagged the Chill DJ party because Chill beer is a young brand which has been there for less than four years but it is growing faster.
“Chill is there to provide fun and that is what you saw tonight and I should also say that we have the Chill DJ battle coming up in two or three weeks time,” said Chirwa.
