NPC to host inaugural development indaba

The National Planning Commission (NPC) will from Thursday this week host a two day inaugural annual National Development Conference to be graced by President Lazarus Chakwera.

The indaba will be held under the theme ‘Beyond Political Freedom to Inclusive Wealth Creation and Self-reliance.’

A statement from NPC says main aim of the forum is to provide a platform where citizens, state and non-state actors as well as development partners will discuss emerging issues from the consultations for the development of the National Transformation 2063, the envisioned successor to Vision 2020.

The conference has been jointly organised by the NPC, the Malawi government, the Council for Non-governmental Organisations, the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Public Private Partnerships Commission (PPPC), and Michigan State University.

A number of development partners are also playing a key supportive role in organising the meeting.

The indaba will be held virtually with limited physical participation that will be coordinated from the Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe according to the statement.

It says interested stakeholders will stay up-to-date with the on-going conference through Zoom, a video technology that provides video and online chat services through peer-to-peer software platform; that enables real-time engagement.

“Following the success of its inaugural forum, The National Development Conference will be an annual event where experts will come together to take stock and discuss how to accelerate agreed national development priorities with the participation, feedback and contributions from different stakeholders which will include the general public,” reads part of the statement.

The NPC was established through an Act of Parliament of 2017 as an independent public agency.

The commission is mandated to coordinate and spearhead the identification of the medium and long-term national development priorities and strategies for the country as well as a mandatory to oversee the implementation of the aforementioned strategies.
