Organisers of the inaugural Nsanje Festival are running against time ahead of the event, which kicks off on July 6 2021.

Musicians Association of Malawi (Mam) in partnership with Nyamithambo Arts Palace and various players in Nsanje District, including Nsanje District Council, have underlined their seriousness in the festival by reaching out to sponsors.

Mam Secretary General Khuza Rampi said Monday they have contacted a number of organisations for support to the festival.

“So far so good, things are heading in the right direction. We are at the moment talking to companies and organisations. Chibuku Products Limited for instance has shown interest in coming in as well as Farmers Organisation Limited,” Rampi said.

He said Farmers Organisation Limited is the first organisation to assure them of sponsorship.

“They are looking at utilising this festival to talk about armyworms as the valley is going into winter cropping,” Rampi said.

He said the festival is there to bring out the best out of Nsanje District.

“There is talent in Nsanje District but the country has not utilised it. Nsanje is the district that has all the ingredients to uplift tourism as well as help in creating employment,” Rampi said.

Veteran bassist Peter Likhomo, who is also a Mam member, said they were happy to take a lead role in spearheading the festival.

“We are looking at giving people the best during this festival. Preparations are in progress and we are talking to artists. This is a different festival aimed at promoting and preserving our culture,” Likhomo said.

He said the festival will also give a chance to budding artists to showcase their talents.

“Our band – Mapale-will be there to work with artists from Nsanje and other up-and-coming artist during the festival,” Likhomo said.

Nyamithambo Arts Proprietor Eric Trinta said recently that the festival has put its budget at K3 million.

“We cannot do it on our own. We need support and companies, government and well-wishers can take advantage and market their products during the festival. For now the listing for Shire valley greats is ready and we will share shortly,” Trinta said.

He said they would be unveiling guest artists to perform at the festival next week.
