Nsanje flood victims advised to move on
The Hindu community in Blantyre on Sunday donated relief items worth K3 million to Nsanje flood victims but with a clear message that it is now time for them to move on with their lives as handouts would take them nowhere.
A representative of the Hindu community, Vijay Kotecha, emphasised the need for the flood victims to restart their lives and have a strong wish to survive instead of being tempted to find pleasure in the handouts they are currently surviving on.
“We are so overcome with emotion following the traumatic and sad episode they went through but they can’t be dependent on the camps forever. They must restart their lives, move on, and take action to survive better,” said Kotecha after presenting the items.
Chairperson on the grouping, Vikesh Vanzara, asked the flood victims to start working hard in their fields and grow cash crops such as cotton to become self-reliant.
He said that was why the group donated maize seeds, pangas, hoes and plastic sheets for constructing houses, in addition to maize flour, blankets and buckets.
“We want to come back next time with a donation of a school block or a clinic but not relief items for ever,” said Vinzara.
Group Village Head Kothela thanked the Hindu community for the assistance, describing it as timely now that government and non-governmental organisations have stopped giving them relief items despite the victims lacking starter-packs for new life.
Nsanje District Protection Committee member, George Tsadoka, said many people have returned to their homes.
This was the third time since January for the Hindu Community to donate to flood victims.
The Sunday donation brought the total value of relief items they have given out to K12 million.
