NSO in new countrywide household welfare survey

The National Statistical Office (NSO) has started assessing the welfare of Malawians through its fourth Integrated Household Survey (IHS4).

The main objective of the survey is to provide up-to-date information on various aspects of welfare and socio-economic status of the population at various levels such as national; urban-rural; region and districts as well as disaggregated by gender.

The survey comes at a time when Malawi’s poverty is pegged at 50.7 percent.

NSO said, in a statement yesterday, that the survey will be conducted for a period of one year from April 2016 to April 2017 in all districts of the country.

“This is aimed at collecting data that will be used to plan and implement activities to improve the standards of living [welfare] of the people in Malawi in line with Sustainable Development Goal number 1 which aims at ending poverty in all its forms everywhere,” reads the NSO statement, in part.

NSO conducts the surveys every five years.

The first was conducted in 1990 followed by others in 1997, 2004 and 2010.
