Almost two years without holding elections after the expiry of the term of the current executive led by veteran actor Eric Mabedi, National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) has started the journey to holding elections.

Ntam has made headway into the process by putting up a taskforce headed by former president McArthur Matukuta.

Matukuta said the taskforce has members from the South, Central and Northern regions.

“As a taskforce, our duty is to organise elections for the executive. Elections are long overdue and we also have a duty to make sure that we raise funds,” Matukuta said.

He admitted that they are running against time as they need to raise enough funds for annual general meeting (AGM) and elections scheduled for September 25 2021.

“ We have started working as I said and we are looking at raising K1.5 million from membership and then we will also reach out to outside sources since our total budget is K5 million,” Matukuta said.

He said they have opened up for nominations for those vying for positions, with the closing day for receiving nominations being July 31 2021.

According to a timeframe of work the taskforce has put up, it includes resource mobilisation which runs up to August 30 while the nomination process runs up to July 31.

The other activities are voters’ verification to take place in August.

Ntam Board Chairperson Timothy Chikoja said Tuesday he was aware of the taskforce and all the work it is doing.

“Everything they are doing, in terms of their work, they are updating the board,” Chikoja said.

Ntam President Eric Mabedi said he was aware of the taskforce and that he also gets briefed on every move they make so as to communicate to the board.

“The taskforce was put up so that we have free and fair elections, and again, there were members in the previous team who were also vying for seats so, it was a challenge for them to spearhead elections. But this taskforce is independent,” he said.

The veteran actor and comedian has indicated that he will not seek re-election for the hot sit, saying he has done his part.
