Seven people died while three others sustained serious injuries in a road accident at Kanyimbo Trading Centre in Ntcheu District Thursday afternoon.
Ntcheu Police spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu, said the accident happened when a truck, loaded with tobacco bales, swerved just after reaching Biliwiri Trading Centre.
“An NA 7947/ NA 7626 freight liner was coming from Ntcheu direction heading to Dedza and, due to speeding, the vehicle swerved to the other lane, hitting other vehicles registration number CP 7947 Toyota Hiace minibus, AJB 6824 Toyota Land cruiser and BL 8837 Nissan Diesel lorry. Six of the dead were boarding the minibus while the other one was driving the truck,” he said.
In June 2019, nine people died in a car accident in Machinga District, three months after 21 people were killed in road carnage at Kampepuza Market in Ntcheu.
Malawi Police Service (MPS) reported that the rate of road traffic accidents rose by 35 out of every 100 in 2018 to 4, 879 cases, compared to 3,626 registered in 2017, due to human error and bad weather.
