TNM Super League outfit Ntopwa FC have suspended four players namely captain Happy Kasamba, vice-captain Mphatso Magaleta, Jawado Kanjuzi and Mark Lameck for breaching Covid-19 guidelines.

The four will take part in Ntopwa’s activities for two month.

The club’s owner Isaac ‘Jomo’ Osman, said the quartet was suspended for allegedly taking part in two unsanctioned matches on October 30th and November 1, this year.

Osman said it was important to punish the players to show that the club was serious in adhering to Covid-19 protocols which Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and Super League of Malawi (Sulom) set ahead of the 2020/21 season kickoff.

“It is true that the four have been suspended for breaking the club’s code of conduct on Covid-19. I forewarned the players not to take part in unsanctioned matches but they did not take my advice. So they have been slapped with two month suspension,” he said.

The Bangwe Township based club, regrouped three weeks ago and Osman downplayed the suspension of his four key players saying this would not affect their preparations.

“We have to move on as a club to maintain discipline. We cannot manage to pay for Covid-19 test for all our players because it is expensive. Fam and the government bailed us on Covid-19 test fees. We expected our players to behave but they are doing the opposite,” he said.

Chisamba said they have apologised to the club’s management saying they breached the guidelines out of ignorance.

“We have apologised for our actions. Of course we have been idle for sometime so out of ignorance we played those games. We are waiting for a response but it will be hard to stay two month having been on break a long break,” he said.

The quartet was instrumental in Ntopwa’s survival last season inspiring the side to finish on position 11 with 35 points from 30 matches. Ntopwa were the first club to access Covid-19 funds from Fam.
