Comedian Nya Uyu has said comedy is one art discipline the country needs to cuddle and open up to, as, besides being a source of entertainment, it is a good vehicle for disseminating important information.
Nya Uyu, real name Felistus Ngwira, said this Wednesday ahead of her new comedy showcase dubbed ‘Vilekeke Night of Laughter Shutdown- Lilongwe Edition’ to be held in Lilongwe on December 26 2022.
The new episode follows her successful outing with ‘Vilekeke Night of Laughter’ in July this year, christened ‘Billionaires Edition’, which she took to Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre and featured international comedians such as William Last Krm from Botswana and Vubwi from Zambia.
“Slowly, Malawians are embracing comedy but there is still more to be done. Comedy can only progress and flourish like in other countries when people give it all the support,” she said.
‘Vilekeke Night of Laughter-Lilongwe Shutdown Edition’ is expected to feature Nya Uyu, Uganda’s Teacher Mpamire, who has been in the country a number of times, Andrea Thonyiwa, popularly known as Mr Jokes, and celebrated musician Patience Namadingo.
“I would like to thank BICC for partnering Vilekeke in this event. As part of this partnership, buying a ticket to the comedy feast means you will get a three-course meal prepared by top class chefs. There is so much stress out there and we need to relax and comedy can help us do that,” Nya Uyu said.
She said she settled for Teacher Mpamire “because he is one of the creams in the industry”.
“People also voted for him; so, we had to bring someone that comedy lovers asked for. This year, we have organised events involving international acts so as to tap into the audiences of other comedians from other countries,” Nya Uyu said.
One of the few female comedians in the country, Nya Uyu said she wants to see the flag of Malawian comedy raised higher.
“The travels I have made in and outside the country have taught me a lot and one of them is the power of collaborations. This time, we have invited international acts and next time they will do the same,” she said.
Namadingo said he would give people something unique.
“I am going to present a stand-up comedy set of 50 minutes,” he said.
