Nyago to star at Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session

Lilongwe-based musician Nyago will Friday debut at Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre.
Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session is a platform that has offered space to artists in the country to showcase their works and is hosted by ethno-musician Waliko Makhala.
It takes a different approach in terms of its set-up, with the musician performing and, at the same time, interacting with the audience through a question-and answer session.
Nyago, real name Lucy Gondwe, has won the hearts of people with her traditional sounds, which are aimed at promoting and preserving culture.
The musician also uses music to tackle issues of gender-based violence and mental health.
“I am excited to be performing at Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session. I am ready to give people traditional music and I am the sound of Malawi,” she said Wednesday.
Famed for songs such as ‘Mdoko’, the artist called on people to come in large numbers to be part of what she described as her rare performance.
“Each time people watch my performance, they will always recognise the difference,” Nyago said.
Makhala said they were happy to welcome Nyago, who he described as a powerful musician, who is rooted in traditional music.
“She is such a rare talent and this is a chance to sample her performance,” Waliko said.
Last Thursday, the stage hosted youthful artist Pon G.
