Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Walter Nyamilandu has commended Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi for standing with Malawi National Beach Soccer Team after their 4-2 loss to Mozambique during the opening match of the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Vilankulo, Mozambique.

The two neighbouring countries got the tournament off to a flying start with a thrilling match that saw Malawi taking the lead twice but the hosts fought back to eventually emerge victorious.

Nyusi joined top Confederation of African Football officials in gracing the official opening ceremony of the continental showpiece.

Nyamilandu said the Mozambique leader congratulated Malawi for putting up a great fight during the match.

“He confessed that it was a tough match and that he did not expect Malawi to be so strong. He was expecting a walkover. He said he could see Malawi going far in this competition. He therefore encouraged the boys not to lose heart with the loss,” he said.

Nyamilandu said it was humbling to see Nyusi interacting with Malawi players and officials in a brotherly manner.

Malawi Coach Willy Kumilambe blamed his team’s loss on lack of experience.

“My players showed some resilience in the face of a respectable opponent but it was a difficult game. I have a young team with the will to fight. We have learned important lessons from this match,” Kumilambe said.
