Musician Nyandoro Mthenga, famed for songs such as ‘Binji Na Mkazache,’ and ‘Wako Ndi Wako’ has released a single titled ‘Ndinenso Munthu’.

Nyandoro, who has always valued traditional music and has been influential in promoting traditional dances from the Lower Shire, said yesterday the single is part of an album he is working on, set to be released in November.

“This single is part of an album I am working on to be released later. The song was released on March 16,” Nyandoro said.

The artist, who plays the mbira, said he will release three singles and that people should watch the space.

Nyandoro has been out of the limelight with some quarters saying he had run out of steam.

“I am still there but it’s not about just releasing songs but doing quality work. It’s not about quantity but quality,” the Lilongwe-based musician said.

He said the single is already on sale and that people can access it on the online platform on apmcstore.

With piracy hitting musicians hard, musicians have changed focus concentrating on singles rather than albums.

The song has seen Nyandoro not running away from his traditional style.

This is a soft track which cannot be likened to danceable tracks such as ‘Binji Na Mkazache’.

“I am determined to launch the album but for now, let people sample the singles. The underlying message in the album is relationships and in this case I am looking at man, woman, neighbours, work life and politics,” Nyandoro said.

He then revealed that the song which will come up next is titled ‘Leka Upoka’, and that in Sena it means stop being stubborn.

“Mind you I am releasing the songs after a six year break and that tells you I have been monitoring the music landscape,” Nyandoro said.

The soft-spoken musician also said that he is planning to hold two shows this year.

But several veteran artists have failed to hit the top, with urban music dominating these days.

“Urban music has taken the right direction but I am still sticking with traditional music which is rich and mature and the identity of the country,” he said.

The last time Nyandoro released his work was in 2012 when he came with No Name but he admits that it was not fully promoted.

Some of the albums to his credit include Binji Na Mkazache, Nyakabusa, Mtchona, Wako Ndi Wako and Best of Nyandoro Mthenga.
